Hands rolling pink polymer clay into a tiny figure at the studio desk

Every Polymer Hands mug is made by hand in our studio in Lahore. Nothing is printed and nothing comes from a mould: each tiny person, pet or name is shaped from soft polymer clay, then fixed to a real mug. Since 2021 we have made more than 1,000 of them, and every single one has gone through the same seven steps. Here they are, from the first message to the parcel at your door.

1. You send us photos and details

It all starts with you. When you personalise a mug on the website you tell us the names or text, how many figures you want, and the little things that make your people recognisable: hair, clothes, glasses, a profession, a favourite pet. You can upload up to five reference photos.

Clear, front-facing photos help most. They are only seen by our team, and we use them for the shape of the hair, the colours of the clothes and the small details that make a figure feel like them.

If you have a deadline, add a needed-by date. Handmade work takes time, so if your date is less than ten days away the website will warn you and suggest a quick WhatsApp message first. We will tell you honestly whether we can make it.

2. A blank mug and soft clay

On the desk, every order starts the same way: a plain glossy or matte mug and polymer clay in the colours of your people. Polymer clay stays soft until it is baked, which is what lets us take our time over the details.

Our mugs are a little thicker than the everyday kind. That is on purpose. After decorating, each mug goes into the oven for about an hour, and a thin mug is more likely to crack in the heat. A thicker wall keeps it safe.

The design goes on one side of the mug. Because the mug is baked after the figures are attached, we work on one face so that every piece can be supported properly while it sets.

3. Shaping the figures

This is the slow, careful part. Each figure is built up by hand, piece by piece: the body, the clothes, the hands, the hair. A doctor gets a lab coat, an engineer gets a hard hat, a cricketer gets a bat. Pets get their own coat pattern.

Our usual style is a blank face or a figure seen from the back, which lets the outfit, the pose and the hair do the talking. Some customers prefer cartoon faces with eyes and a smile, and we are happy to make those on request. Just mention it in the figure details.

4. Details, lettering and your tweaks

Once the figures are in place we add the finishing pieces: names in clay letters, hearts, balloons, flowers, a stethoscope or a little clipboard. Short text works best in clay. Very long lines are hard to make neat at this size, so we may suggest a shorter version.

This is also when small changes are easiest. Customers have asked us for a rounder face, softer eyebrows on a baby, or neater lettering, and because the clay is still soft we can adjust it before it goes in the oven.

5. Baking to set

When everything is in place, the mug is baked. The heat sets the polymer clay hard onto the mug, so the figures stay where they belong. This is the step that turns a soft sculpture into something you can hold, wash gently and keep.

6. Painting the finest details, and a photo for you

Some details are too small to sculpt, so they are painted with a fine brush: eyes, buttons, tiny patterns and the smallest lettering.

Then we take a photo of your finished mug and send it to you before it leaves the studio, so you see exactly what is coming before it is dispatched.

7. Packed with love, and on its way

Finally, the mug is wrapped in bubble wrap and packed into a foam-lined box with a little card, then handed to the courier. We deliver all over Pakistan for a flat Rs 250, from Karachi to Gilgit.

From your order to dispatch, a mug usually takes 7 to 10 days. If you chose Rs 500 advance + cash on delivery, you pay the rest when the parcel arrives.

Couriers are not always perfect. If your mug ever arrives broken or damaged, send us photos on WhatsApp within 48 hours of delivery and we will make you a free replacement.

Why it takes 7 to 10 days

Put together, those seven steps are a lot of handwork for one small mug. Sculpting, baking, cooling, painting and packing all take time, and we would rather take that time than rush a gift you will keep for years.
